Job Description

Overview of the Role:

Pelago is seeking a mission-driven, board-certified Addiction Medicine Physician with deep expertise in Substance Use Disorder (SUD) treatment to join our clinical team. In this role, you'll provide direct member care via telehealth, delivering evidence-based SUD treatment to help individuals overcome addiction and achieve lasting recovery.

This is a unique opportunity to make a meaningful impact in digital SUD care delivery, working with cutting-edge telemedicine technology to reach members who need specialized psychiatric support. You'll be part of a collaborative, interdisciplinary team dedicated to transforming addiction treatment through innovative, accessible care.

This is a remote and part-time role, averaging approximately 10 hours per week, open to candidates located in the United States. Multi-state licensure is strongly preferred.

In this role you will…

  • Provide comprehensive SUD care to Pelago members via virtual visits, including thorough assessments, diagnosis, and medication management for SUD and co-occurring conditions.
  • Prescribe and monitor Medication Assisted Treatment (MAT), including naltrexone, Suboxone, and other evidence-based pharmacotherapies, in close collaboration with our member operations team.
  • Address concurrent mental health issues, such as mild to moderate anxiety, depression, sleep disorders, and other conditions frequently found with SUD, in collaboration with the clinical team.
  • Work within Atlas, Pelago's AI-native EHR, which automates session documentation, surfaces real-time evidence-based guidance during calls, and prepares clinical context before each session — so your time stays focused on member care, not administrative lift.
  • Collaborate with counselors, coaches, and member operations to deliver optimized, coordinated care that enhances the member experience and supports recovery.
  • Contribute to clinical excellence through participation in case reviews, journal clubs, grand rounds, and peer reviews to maintain high-quality, evidence-based care.
  • Develop personalized treatment plans and offer referrals based on clinical assessments and individual member needs.
  • Maintain accurate and up-to-date clinical documentation, supporting quality assurance and compliance efforts to ensure the best patient outcomes.
  • Educate patients in a way that is tailored to their unique needs, abilities, and recovery goals.
  • Collaborate on cross-functional projects with counselor, growth, and product teams to improve care delivery and member outcomes.
  • Help refine and implement clinical protocols, treatment standards, and policies to enhance overall care quality.
  • Commit to 10 hours per week supporting our patients.

The background we are looking for…

  • Board-certified physician (MD or DO) in one of the following:
    • Psychiatry (ABPN or AOA), with significant SUD treatment experience; Addiction Psychiatry subspecialty preferred, or
    • Internal Medicine, Family Medicine, or other ABMS/AOA primary specialty, with Addiction Medicine subspecialty certification (ABPM) or board eligibility
  • Active licensure in at least one U.S. state; multi-state licensure strongly preferred. Must be willing to obtain additional state licensure as needed (Pelago will sponsor this).
    • OK or PA preferred to support current patient demand
  • DEA registration (or in process) and current state-controlled substance license (or in process).
  • Comfort working in an AI-augmented care environment; openness to adopting AI-assisted tools that support documentation, member communication, and clinical decision-making.
  • Experience in telemedicine, with advanced comfort level using digital platforms and electronic health records (EHRs).
  • A passion for patient-centered care, innovation in addiction medicine, and continuous quality improvement.
  • Strong communication skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively across teams and organizations.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • IMLC (Interstate Medical Licensure Compact) participation
  • Previous experience in digital health or telemedicine environments

Note: At this time, we are unable to offer visa sponsorship for this position. There may be a 5-10% travel requirement in states requiring in-person assessments.
