Job Description

DevOps Engineer — AWS and GitHub

Function: Engineering
Reports to: Sr. Director of Engineering

Role Summary

Real Chemistry is looking to hire a DevOps Engineer for AWS & GitHub! This Engineer owns the infrastructure path that takes applications from AI assisted prototypes into Real Chemistry managed AWS hosted environments (staging and production). Builds and operates GitHub native CI/CD pipelines, AWS infrastructure, and observability tooling that make governance frameworks executable for client facing products.

Applications are initially prototyped using AI assisted coding tools (e.g., Replit, Cursor, Claude Code) and require production hardening for enterprise deployment.

This is a hybrid role, based in any of our US offices—including New York City, Boston, Chicago, Carmel, or San Francisco—or remotely within the US, depending on team and business needs.

Key Responsibilities

  • Build and maintain AWS reference architectures using services such as ECS/Fargate, EKS, Lambda, RDS, and S3.
  • Develop and operate GitHub Actions CI/CD pipelines with:
    • Staged deployment workflows
    • Environment protection rules
    • OIDC-based authentication to AWS
  • Manage infrastructure-as-code (Terraform) including:
    • Remote state backends
    • Module versioning
    • Drift detection
  • Establish and operate environments that increase in level of pipeline complexity and security requirements as they progress, enforcing peer review and deployment controls.
  • Define and maintain “lift patterns” to transition apps from prototype environments into AWS-hosted staging and production.
  • Provision and manage AWS infrastructure (compute, storage, networking, databases, backups) and lead HA/DR design for production systems.
  • Operate the observability stack (metrics, logs, traces, alerting) leveraging AWS native and integrated tooling.
  • Implement cost governance practices:
    • Tagging strategies
    • Cost monitoring (AWS Cost Explorer, Budgets)
  • Partner with Information Security on pipeline integrated controls (image scanning, secrets management, IAM aware pipelines).
  • Provide onboarding support and office hours for developers preparing for production promotion.
  • Maintain runbooks and incident response playbooks; participate in on-call rotation.

Required Qualifications

  • 3+ years operating production workloads in AWS environments
  • Strong experience with Terraform (IaC lifecycle, state management, modules)
  • Experience designing CI/CD pipelines using GitHub Actions
  • Working knowledge of:
    • AWS IAM and least-privilege access design
    • OIDC federation between GitHub and AWS
  • Experience supporting SLAs, incident response, and on-call operations

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with ECS/Fargate, EKS, or AWS Lambda
  • Exposure to FinOps and AWS cost governance practices
  • Experience productionizing AI assisted or low-code applications
  • Familiarity with AI-assisted development tools (Replit, Cursor, Claude Code)

Additional Notes

  • Primary Platform: AWS + GitHub
  • On-call: Participation in a shared rotation supporting production systems (details provided during interview process)

Pay Range: $60,000-$80,000
