Job Description

Mathematics Education Fellow (1:1 Research Initiative)

Location: Fully Remote (Must be US-based)

Position Type: 1-Year Fellowship (With potential extension to years 2 and 3)

Salary: $100,000 annually + comprehensive benefits

About the Initiative

Our client is a heavily backed, high-impact philanthropic initiative undertaking a rigorous scientific study on foundational elementary education in America. Financed by $15M from visionary technology pioneers, the project couples world-class data science with elite pedagogy to evaluate student achievement metrics.

Rather than executing standard online instruction, this initiative is building a highly controlled cohort of master instructors to benchmark the specific cognitive efficacy of sustained, 1:1 human mathematics tutoring against both AI-driven tutoring modalities and traditional classroom models. The resulting data will directly inform the future landscape of primary education.

The Role & Academic Scope

This role is structured as an elite, one-year educational fellowship. Our client is looking for rigorous, deliberate practitioners who view learning through an analytical lens.

  • Targeted 1:1 Instruction: Deliver approximately 3 hours daily of high-fidelity, individualized virtual mathematics instruction to a dedicated cohort of 3rd and 4th-grade students.
  • Curriculum Design & Diagnostics: Diagnose student mathematical misconceptions and strengths in real time. Rather than relying on rigid, pre-packaged textbooks, you will prescribe and deploy custom, fluid learning pathways rooted in established cognitive research.
  • Metacognitive Documentation: Dedicate roughly 60 minutes daily to structured reflection, logging detailed "decision journals" after every session. You will track micro-data regarding student cognitive states, instructional interventions, and data-driven adjustments.
  • Institutional Collaboration: Participate actively in observation, clinical peer reviews, and ongoing feedback cycles alongside an expert team of researchers and data scientists. Exceptional fellows will naturally have the opportunity to step into lead instructor capacities as the cohort expands.

Who This Role Is For

  • Educators with a passion for deep, conceptual math instruction. You are genuinely drawn to the empirical question of how children learn, and you excel when given the space to focus entirely on one student at a time rather than managing a chaotic classroom.
  • Analytical, structured, and deliberate practitioners. Tracking micro-signals, analyzing student errors, and keeping pristine documentation appeals to your logical, almost scientific approach to teaching.
  • Versatile academics and seasoned teachers alike. You might be a certified career teacher seeking relief from administrative school-board bureaucracy, or a top-tier university graduate (with a strong background in math, data science, or psychology) who boasts a verifiable track record of shifting student academic trajectories.

Who This Role Is NOT For

  • Anyone looking for a casual tutoring side-gig. If you are seeking an informal, hourly homework-help position to supplement another job, this commitment is a mismatch. This is a full-time, primary professional fellowship requiring intense cognitive presence and accountability.
  • Instructors who rely strictly on pre-packaged lesson plans. If you require standardized worksheets, rigid script scripts, or fixed textbooks to execute a lesson, you will struggle with the baseline autonomy this research demands. You must be comfortable building adaptive pathways dynamically based on the student in front of you.
  • Candidates seeking a typical corporate EdTech startup environment. This is not a fast-paced, sales-driven commercial operation looking to scale a product. It is a calm, measured, and intellectually serious research study. Success here is defined by pedagogical depth, scientific validity, and concrete student outcomes.

Requirements & Research Baseline Controls

To satisfy the baseline demands of the research model and limit confounding variables across the study, all applicants must meet the following profile criteria:

  • Residency: Must be a US citizen or long-term resident currently living and operating within the United States.
  • Pedagogical Track Record: Verifiable experience moving the needle in early-to-mid elementary mathematics, demonstrating a profound understanding of foundational numerical logic.
  • Virtual Engagement: Elite communication skills over a digital medium, with an innate ability to maintain rapport and active attention with 8-to-10-year-olds in a virtual classroom setting.
  • Administrative Reliability: Flawless execution of daily documentation requirements (decision journaling) and a high comfort level with performance data tracking.
