Job Description

Every week, The New York Times hosts hundreds of conversations in our comments sections across a wide variety of topics and types of articles — from investigations and breaking news to features and service journalism. We are seeking a Senior Editor to work directly with reporters, writers and editors to build this community.

This role is designed for an editor who thrives in fast-paced environments, possesses sharp news judgment, and loves finding creative ways to bring reader voices into our journalism. You will be collaborating with editors and reporters to identify opportunities for them to participate in comments, editing posts for length, clarity and accessibility and finding appropriate places to embed conversations in our journalism. You will also work closely with the wider community team to ensure our editorial approach and workflow fits into evolving moderation and policy guidelines.

The ideal candidate is eager to experiment with new approaches to reader engagement, be comfortable training creative teams on technical concepts and is brimming with ideas for how to build and support online communities.

This is an in-office position, based in New York City and includes regular attendance in the office four days each week. There may be some flexibility to work remotely per your departmental guidance.

Responsibilities:

  • Identify articles and storylines that would benefit from journalist participation in the comments, and reach out to editors and reporters in advance of publication.

  • Edit posts for length, clarity and tone, helping to grow the number of journalists who are independently posting in creative ways that align with our style.

  • Collect high quality examples of reporter participation and help train the global newsroom on best practices.

  • Make Community team initiatives more visible and useful to the wider newsroom and enterprise by writing regular internal updates.

  • Build pathways to community surfaces by embedding comments across the report and help track their effectiveness.

  • Pitch and execute on community-first initiatives that deepen reader-reporter relationships, e.g. AMAs, UGC roundups

  • Collaborate with cross-functional partners to build and improve tools that make journalist participation easy and intuitive.

  • Help to develop guardrails and approaches for staff to participate in conversations about hot-button topics across the report.

  • Demonstrate support and understanding of our value of journalistic independence and a strong commitment to our mission to seek the truth and help people understand the world.

  • You will report to the Community Editorial Lead.

Basic Qualifications:

  • 5+ years of editorial experience with news organizations or media companies

  • Excellent editorial judgment and project management skills

  • Demonstrated interest in the online community ecosystem

  • Passion for The New York Times mission and commitment to be part of our innovation and growth

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience training reporters and editors on digital tools and editorial approaches.

  • A proven ability to meet deadlines in a fast-paced news environment.

  • Editing samples of work you have assigned or played a significant role in shaping.
