Job Description

Job Description: Student Loan Specialist

Role Type: Contractor
Location: United States (Remote)

About the Role

We are seeking experienced Student Loan Specialists to support an AI training and evaluation project focused on federal student loan programs. In this role, you will leverage your borrower counseling and student loan expertise to evaluate AI-generated questions and responses, ensuring they reflect real-world borrower concerns and provide accurate, relevant, and helpful guidance.

Your knowledge will help improve how AI systems understand federal student loan policies, repayment options, forgiveness programs, and loan servicing processes. No prior AI experience is required; your subject matter expertise is what matters.

Scope of Work

  1. Review sample federal student loan questions and identify or flag inquiries that do not accurately reflect real-world borrower concerns.

  2. Develop and refine evaluation rubrics defining the standards for accurate, complete, and helpful answers related to repayment, forgiveness, and loan relief programs, including Income-Driven Repayment (IDR) plans and Public Service Loan Forgiveness (PSLF).

  3. Expand rubric coverage to include loan servicing challenges, deferment, forbearance, and student loan default management scenarios.

  4. Evaluate AI-generated responses using established rubrics, identifying inaccuracies, missing information, and outdated guidance.

  5. Provide concise, constructive written feedback to the project team asynchronously to support continuous improvements in response quality.

  6. Identify and report incorrect guidance, unclear borrower communication, and potentially misleading or inappropriate loan servicing recommendations.

  7. Collaborate with other subject matter experts to ensure evaluation rubrics and feedback reflect current federal student loan policies and practices.

Required Qualifications

  1. Minimum of one year of direct experience advising borrowers on federal student loans through nonprofit counseling organizations, college or university financial aid offices, loan servicing companies, or default management programs.

  2. Strong knowledge of federal student loan repayment strategies, including Income-Driven Repayment (IDR) plans, forgiveness programs such as PSLF, deferment, forbearance, and default resolution.

  3. Practical understanding of loan servicing operations, common servicer-related challenges, and effective borrower communication strategies.

  4. Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to explain complex student loan policies and technical guidance clearly.

  5. Experience reviewing or developing student loan guidance documents, evaluation rubrics, educational resources, or training materials.

  6. Ability to work independently in a remote, asynchronous environment and provide detailed, actionable feedback through digital platforms.

  7. Must be a U.S. resident with familiarity with federal student loan regulations and current administrative practices.

Preferred Qualifications

  1. Experience evaluating borrower-facing communications, student loan guidance, or financial counseling materials for accuracy and clarity.

  2. Familiarity with federal student loan servicing systems, repayment administration, and borrower support processes.

  3. Experience with AI training, model evaluation, data annotation, or content quality assurance projects.
